Music and Art in the Foothills 2015—2016 Season

Dear Friends of the Arts, Welcome to the twenty-ninth season that the Placitas Artists Series presents fine art and music in the foothills of the Sandias. And, what a wonderful season it is, featuring an eclectic mix of new performers, returning musicians, and new and familiar friends with Willy Sucre. Katie Mahan performs a solo piano concert in October. In her words, “I believe that music is one of the most precious gifts that mankind has been given.” In December, the Presidio Saxophone Quartet  comes to Placitas. “Presidio brings heaven to earth. A delight for mind, heart, and spirit,” wrote the president of the Tucson Jazz Society. In February, Van Cliburn Gold Medalist Jon Nakamatsu, pianist, returns with clarinetist Jon Manasse. This highly acclaimed duo has performed across the country in prestigious venues. In April, Jason Vieaux, winner of the 2015 Grammy Award for Best Classical Instrumental Solo, returns for a solo guitar concert. The foundation of our chamber series is Willy Sucre and Friends. This year his friends include familiar musicians Joan Zucker, Ivonne and Guillermo Figueroa, Krzysztof Zimowski, Justin Pollak, and Joanna de Keyser, with a host of new friends. As an erstwhile physicist I must draw your attention to the January concert. Willy and friends will play “Einstein’s Favorite Quartets,” accompanied by actor Thomas Schuch, an Einstein impersonator, who will comment on the music being performed. Einstein played violin and piano, revered Mozart, and attributed his scientific insight to music. He said, “The theory of relativity occurred to me by intuition, and music is the driving force behind this intuition.” The PAS mission encompasses the visual as well as the performing arts. Each month we have artists representing a variety of 2-D and 3-D media. These juried art exhibits showcase the work of New Mexico artists. The artwork is for sale, and the sales help support PAS. In addition to the exhibits PAS conducts an annual competition for a new “brand” image. This year Claudia Fluegge’s silk painting “3 Wild Ponies” graces our program book and website. Claudia says, “I got my inspiration for this silk painting when I heard about the wild horses in Placitas.” We welcome youth of all ages to our concerts and encourage adults to bring youngsters to our concerts to experience art and live performance. Students are admitted at reduced rates and music students are admitted free of charge. We offer an incredible, inspiring artistic experience, organized by a group of hard-working board members and volunteers. Many others provide the support needed to make all of this possible. Please patronize and thank our concert sponsors, donors, and advertisers who contribute so much. On behalf of the Board, I thank you all for your support and attendance. Enjoy the season!
