Violist Kimberly Fredenburgh, originally from New York, is a professor of viola and cham-
ber music and serves as head of the string area at the University of New Mexico.
Fredenburgh has been featured as a soloist and chamber musician across the United States,
including Puerto Rico, South Africa, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Canada, Portugal, Spain,
Germany, Italy, and Monaco. Fredenburgh is principal violist of the Santa Fe Symphony
Orchestra and Santa Fe Pro Musica, while serving as associate principal violist of the New
Mexico Philharmonic. Fredenburgh has performed many seasons with the Santa Fe Cham-
ber Music Festival, the Santa Fe Opera, and the Santa Fe Desert Chorale; she is also a
regular performer with Chatter.
Fredenburgh served on the faculty at Arizona State University while also performing as
associate principal of the Phoenix Symphony and was a principal violist in the New World
Symphony in Miami under Michael Tilson Thomas. She has delivered pedagogical papers
and performed at several national string conferences and international competitions. Her
interest in contemporary music has resulted in the creation of many new works for the
viola. Recent performances include European premieres of chamber works by University of
New Mexico composers.
Cellist Amy Huzjak lives in Albu-
querque and serves as principal cellist
of the New Mexico Philharmonic
since January, 2022. She also collabo-
rates with many area organizations
including Chatter, Opera Southwest,
and the Santa Fe Symphony and Cho-
rus. She is a founding member of the
Chasqui Quartet, touring Colorado in
August, 2021 and the Midwest in Sum-
mer, 2022.
Brazilian-born violinist Cármelo de los Santos
enjoys an exciting career as a soloist, chamber
musician, and pedagogue. From his extensive con-
certo experience to his most recent performances
of the 24 Caprices by Paganini and the Sonatas and
Partitas by Bach, his virtuosity and commitment
to communicate the essence of music captivates
audiences world wide. Cármelo has performed as a
guest soloist with over 40 orchestras, including
the New World Symphony, Santa Fe Pro Musica,
the Santa Fe and New Mexico Symphonies, the
Montevideo Philharmonic, Orquestra Musica
d’Oltreoceano (Rome), and the major orchestras in
Brazil. Cármelo is a winner of several interna-
tional competitions including the Fourth Júlio
Cardona International String Competition (Portu-
gal). In 2002 Cármelo made his New York debut as
soloist and conductor in the Weill Recital Hall at
Carnegie Hall with the ARCO Chamber Orchestra.
Cármelo is an associate professor of violin at the
University of New Mexico, and performs on a 1828
J. B. Vuillaume violin.
Violinist and violist Laura Chang, a native of Wisconsin, was born into a
musical family, and began her studies shortly after her fourth birthday.
Laura earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Peabody Conser-
vatory, under the tutelage of Martin Beaver and Pamela Frank, for whom
she was a graduate assistant.
Laura is an avid chamber and orchestral musician whose performances
have taken her to venues across the US, Canada, and Europe. While a res-
ident of Washington, DC, she was a member of the National Philharmonic
and the Maryland Symphony, and frequently performed with major
orchestras in the Baltimore/Washington metro area. More recently, she
performed with the Colorado Symphony and the Colorado Springs Phil-
harmonic. In 2020, Laura and her family moved to Albuquerque, where
she is the principal violist with the New Mexico Philharmonic, and a vio-
linist with the Santa Fe Symphony.
Felix Fan is a rare talent in the world of contemporary music as a
soloist, collaborative artist and advocate for new music. A strong advo-
cate for the creation and commissioning of new music, Fan has
premiered over 100 works, collaborating with contemporary com-
posers such as Philip Glass, Hans Werner Henze, Oliver Knussen,
Meredith Monk, Steve Reich, Kaija Saariaho, Tan Dun, Julia Wolfe and
Charles Wuorinen. On the world stage, he has appeared at Carnegie
Hall, the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Musikverein and the Royal
Festival Hall and as soloist with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the
National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, and the Munich Chamber
Orchestra. As a member of Flux Quartet, Fan pushes the boundaries of
contemporary music, embracing the avant garde and interpreting the
innovative styles of emerging composers and artists.
