Karl Hofmann is the first in a series of visual artists that will be honored by the Placitas Artists Series. Throughout the year PAS will give special attention to our treasured local artist by offering artworks specially produced by Karl for our patrons, and exhibited on a monthly basis. He produced the image for this year’s website and program. Karl taught humanities and art at universities around the country. In 1976 he settled with his wife, Mary, in Placitas among other artists in this unique community. He taught at Sandia Prep School for 19 years and produced pottery for art fairs. He thinks of his pottery as New Mexico landscapes and hopes that, like the mesas, they will last in their beauty and usefulness. Since retiring from teaching he has developed his many skills by attending printmaking and pastel workshops. Karl says, “My work is based on personal experiences. I am process- oriented. I enjoy seeing a lump of clay evolve into a shape, or the various blocks of linocut come together to produce an image, or the layers of pastel merge into a landscape. Ceramic glazes have now morphed into painterly effects found in my prints and pastels.”
