As a resident of Placitas New Mexico for twenty-two years Vangie Dunmire has been privileged to pursue her love of painting as well as volunteer work in non-profit arts oriented organizations. While working on a degree in Art History at the University of New Mexico, she included courses in marketing and management for non-profit arts organizations like the local arts councils in many communities around the country. She had facilitated the organization of such council while living in Coulee Dam, Washington, in the late 1970's and found the experience very rewarding. After earning a BAFA degree in 1988 realized this interest by joining the Arts in the School program in Albuquerque and served first as a volunteer teacher in the Placitas Elementary School and then also as a Board member.
In the late 1990's she was invited to become a member of the Board for the Placitas Artists Series and served for seven years as their school outreach coordinator responsible for scheduling educational musical, theater and dance assembly programs in the head start, elementary and secondary level schools in Sandoval County. As a member of the New Mexico Watercolor Society, she's maintained contact with others who paint with watercolors. Her interest in classical music as continued her involvement with a local church choir and travel whenever possible.
While working on her art history degree Dunmire studied drawing, design, painting and printmaking and continued her education with local instructors and painting workshops focusing on watercolor. She paints mostly in her studio and feels fortunate to have excellent landscape painting material right from her home on the north slopes of the Sandia Mountains in New Mexico and thinks the best painting opportunities come when outdoors enjoying a special location. Her work has been exhibited in galleries in Albuquerque, NM, and numerous shows locally. |
