Lisa Chernoff is a native of New
Mexico living in Placitas. In 1992 Chernoff returned to her love of
working in clay, both wheel throwing and hand building. In 1997 she
began to experiment fusing found, scrap glass with her clay firings. The
results were usually disappointing but often enough very interesting. As
she learned more about the properties of glass, she made the transition
to working with glass exclusively. An award-winning artist, Chernoff
currently focuses on large wall and table sculptures and very large
bowls, but continues to create wall hangings, smaller bowls, and formal
and casual jewelry for men and women. Her work is sold in galleries
nationally. Custom orders are always a welcome challenge.

"My latest work in fused glass focuses
on large three-dimensional sculptures which may call to mind aspects found
in nature such as wind, water and organic matter. I like to combine
textural and geometric elements into these pieces to elicit lively and
serene feelings in my viewers. Each finished piece is solid glass but is
composed of numerous pieces before its first firing. Aside from color and
design, the finished shape, achieved by the original cuts, grinding and
slumping (heat shaping) work in unison to complete the visual affect I am
trying to impart. Grinding and altering a piece into its final shape is
often dictated by its appearance after the first firing. The brilliant
color within each piece is called dichroic glass and is exciting to work
with because it presents such versatility in design." |
